Best BD-Live Players

Here are a few of the best BD Live ready players around.

Playstation 3Playstation 3 BD-Live Player It’s hard for any Blu-ray player to compete with the PS3 considering everything this device can do. If you are even slightly interested in gaming then there’s no good reason to own a Blu-ray player other than this one.

The PS3 comes with at least 80GB of hard drive space depending on what version you get, which will allow you plenty of space to download tv shows, movies, whatever you want.

Playstation recently announced that they added the ability for PS3 Netflix streaming. The PS3 will use its BD-Live functionality to allow users to connect to their Netflix Instant Watch accounts and stream movies and tv shows for free. Users are required to use a disc for the functionality to work, which is a little klunky, but this is still a great addition to the PS3's feature set.

LG BD390LG BD390 BD Live PlayerReleased in May 2009, this Blu-ray player from LG sports some of the fastest loading times we’ve come across. This may sound like a minor feature but really, what’s more frustrating than having to sit and wait for the movie you’ve been waiting to see to actually load and play? It’s annoying. But with this player that isn’t a problem.

Like many recent players, the LG BD390 allows you to access streaming services such as Netflix and Amazon Video on Demand. This helps to justify the high price tag of these high end players, you can use them as more of a media center than just a disc player.

Samsung BD-P3600Samsung BD-P3600 BD Live PlayerOne of the most interesting things about the Samsung player is its unique design. It truly is a funky looking piece of equipment with a glossy black finish and rounded corners.

The Samsung also is a very fast loading machine, faster than even the PS3’s loading time. It is able to stream Netflix and Pandora, which is a great feature. Pandora is a fantastic music service, we definitely recommend trying it out if you haven’t.

Another super cool benefit is the player comes with a USB Wi-fi dongle which will allow you to connect to your home’s wifi network; no long network cables necessary.

Oppo BDP-83Oppo BDP-83 BD Live PlayerOppo isn't as well known in consumer circles as brands such as Sony and Samsung, but enthusiasts know that Oppo makes the best upconverting DVD players around. And their much anticipated Blu-ray player lives up to that lofty reputation.

One of the great things about the BDP-83 is that is plays a wide range of discs, from CDs, Dvd-Audio, SACD and regular DVDs. It can also playback PAL encoded DVDs. Also, the Oppo comes with an HDMI cable which you'd think would be standard with all Blu-ray players but unfortunately is not.

Where other Blu-ray players are getting sleeker, the Oppo is still somewhat large but this isn't meant as a criticism. The device feels well made and sturdy, something that's going to last.

The Oppo doesn't have quite as many BD-Live/Internet ready features as some of the other players do. It doesn't have built in Wi-Fi and it doesn't offer Netflix or Pandora streaming like other players do. But it can handle all manner of digital media stored on a USB drive. Plug in your drive and the player can play your pictures, photos and video files.

Oppo has a reputation of making high quality players and their new BDP-83 is a great addition to their family. It may be missing some features but it makes up for that in quality and craftsmanship.
